What is income tax Department?

Income tax department is a government agency which is responsible for collecting direct taxes from the citizen for the government. Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) which leads it. Income tax department was formed in 1860 and it comes under the ministry of Ministry of Finance and currently Nirmala Sitharaman is the finance minister. The headquarter of it is in New Delhi, North Block, Secretariat Building.

An Income Tax Officer (ITO) is a post in the Income Tax Department. An Income Tax inspector works under or according to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), and their duties are related to tax matters such as analyzing or examining personal tax or business tax to ensure that the amount of tax is being paid timely and correctly and timely by the taxpayer.

How To Become Income Tax Officer

There is only one way available through which you can become an Income Tax Officer and that is CGL exam (staff selection commission-combined graduate level). This is one of the tautest exam in India and clearing this exam you'll first become an Inspector in Income Tax Department and after promotion you'll become a officer. The exam is combined with seral government jobs such as CBI officer (SI), Junior Statistical Officer, Assistant Enforcement Officer, Income tax inspector, etc. 

Income Tax Officer exam syllabus 

SSC CGL exam is divided into 4 stages (Tier 1, 2, 3 and 4) and candidates must qualify all these 4 stages followed by an interview, physical fitness test and medical test. The syllabus of this exam is consisted of  several subject and we'll discuss them in the following ways :

CGL Tier 1 Exam Syllabus 

Tier 1 exam is comprised with 4 papers, Quantitative Aptitude, English Comprehension, Reasoning and GI, and General Awareness. And Each paper consists of 25 questions and 50 marks are allotted per paper, so Tier 1 exam is of around 200 marks and is an MCQ type and online (computer) based exam. And the allotted time for this exam is 1 hour (20 minuities extra for PWD candidates). Tier 1 exam will also have negative marking, 0.55 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer. 

SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam Syllabus

Tier 2 exam consists of Quantitative Ability, English Language and Comprehension, Statistics and General Studies. And each paper is of 200 marks, having 100 MCQ questions (except English paper. There are 200 questions in English paper), so Tier 2 exam has total 800 marks, and it is also an online (computer) based exam, and time allotted for each paper is 2 hours (40 minutes extra for PWD candidates). There will also have negative marking, 0.25 marks will be deducted for each wrong answer. 

SSC CGL Tier 3 Exam Syllabus

Tier 3 exam consists of only one paper and that is writing skill test (application writing, letter writing, precis, etc). It is a descriptive type exam, means pen and paper mode exam. The paper is of 100 marks and the time allotted for it is 1 hour (20 minutes extra for PWD candidates).

SSC CGL Tier 4 exam Syllabus

Tier 4 exam is about skill test (CPT test and DEST test). Candidates have to type 2000 words in English on computer in 15 minutes. This test is conducted to check the typing skills of a candidate. Candidates are given a English article and that article have to write on computer as fast as possible. This is a qualifying paper, means marks will not be added to the main result.

Eligibility criteria for Income Tax Officer exam

SSC CGL Exam Eligibility Criteria is based on some requirements that are required to apply for this exam and that is education reequipment, age limit, nationality, physical requirements, etc. We'll discuss it in the following ways :

Education qualification for income tax officer exam 

The minimum educational qualification required for SSC CGL exam is that you should have at least a Bachelor's degree or Graduation degree from any recognized university or college. You can not apply for this exam if you don't have a bachelor's degree and even if you are a 2nd year or 3rd year undergraduate student, you are not eligible to apply for this exam. No percentage or stream (Honours, General, Distance, Pass) is required for this exam. You have to just complete you graduation to eligible for this exam. 

Age limit of income tax officer

The age limit for SSC CGL is that you must be between 18 to 30 years of age to apply for this exam. Although there are some age relaxation for some reserved category candidates, such as:

  • For SC and ST candidates : 5 years.
  • For OBC candidates : 3 years.
  • For unreserved candidates with PWD (Person with disabilities) : 10 years.
  • For SC candidates with PWD : 15 years.
  • For OBC candidates with PWD : 13 years.
  • For resident of Jammu and Kashmir from January 1, 1980 to December 31, 1989 : 5 years.
  • For defense personnel who become disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area in his own country and who granted leave on account thereof :  3 years.
  • And for SC/ST defense personnel who become disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area in his own country and who granted leave on account thereof : 5 years

Citizenship requirements for SSC CGL exam

To apply for this exam, you must be a citizen of India or a subject of Nepal and Bhutan. And candidates from Tibetan refugees who came to India for their permanent settlement as permanent residents before January 1, 1962, can also apply for this examination. A person of Indian origin who has permanently migrated to India from Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Myanmar etc, can also apply for this exam. And candidates who do not have Indian citizenship need an Eligibility Certificate from the Government of India for this exam. 

Physical eligibility requirement 

Physical test, required for SSC CGL exam is only applicable for Sub-inspector and Inspector post. For the post of Income Tax Officer, height must be 157.5 cm for males and 152 cm for females. And chest requirement for men is 81 cm and weight is minimum 48 kg for women. Male candidates have to walk 1600 meters in about 15 minutes and have to cycling 8 km in about 30 minutes. And for female candidates it would be 1 km walk in 20 minutes and 3 km cycling in 25 minutes. 

 Salary of an Income Tax Officer

The salary of an Income Tax Officer depends on certain factors like his position in the department, his job, whether his posting is in a big city, whether he lives in a big city or not, etc. The salary of an Income Tax Inspector is around 44,900 to 142400 with dearness allowance.

FAQs on how to become an Income Tax Officer 

How many marks are required for Income Tax Inspector post?

SSC CGL exam has total 1100 marks (Tier 1 + Tier 2 + Tier 3) and out of these 1100 marks you need to get at least 700 marks to become Income Tax Inspector. You need to score as much as possible to get this post because nowadays there are many students who want to become Income Tax Officer.  

Is maths compulsory for Income Tax Officer?

Not exactly but in CGL exam, there is a paper called Quantitative Aptitude or Quantitative Ability and as you know Quantitative Aptitude is all about Maths. So, to get better marks or rank in this exam, you need to practice maths carefully to get the post of tax inspector. Maths questions usually come from class VIII to XII. 

Which degree is best for Income Tax inspector?

As per SSC Eligibility Criteria, you must have at least a graduation degree to apply for this exam with any stream ( Honours or general). And in terms of best degree for this exam or this post, we suggest you to choose arts stream, though other streams are also good, but if we see this exam syllabus and requirements for this exam, it seems that arts is the best stream for it.

Does income tax inspector have uniform?

No, there is no uniform for Income Tax Officers. They don't wear any kind of uniform. Although there is no uniform for income tax inspector, but Excise Inspectors who wear Khaki uniform. 

Can I become Income Tax Officer after 12th?

No, you can not become Tax Inspector after 12th. As we have already said that you must have a bachelor's degree to apply for this exam. You can start your preparation after 12th along with your graduation, but we suggest you to complete your graduation and then start your preparation for this exam.
